I completed my Bachelor’s degree in zoology at the University of Pretoria in 2006. Thereafter I completed my BSc Honours (cum laude) which included a research project entitled "Population size estimate of Indo Pacific bottlenose dolphins in the Algoa Bay region, South Africa" supervised by Dr. Leszek Karczmarski and Prof. Marthán Bester. In 2008 I went to sub-Antarctic Marion Island for 14 months with the South African National Antarctic Programme, collecting data for Prof. Marthán Bester’s long-running pinniped research project and for my Master’s degree on killer whales. Thereafter I completed my MSc dissertation (cum laude) at the University of Pretoria, entitled “Abundance and predatory impact of killer whales at Marion Island.”
I shall shortly be returning from a second year on Marion Island where I have been collecting more seal data as well as data for my PhD on killer whales, supervised by Dr. Nico de Bruyn.
I have had the privilege of travelling to Gough Island in the South Atlantic and King George Island off the Antarctic peninsula for seal research.
I am particularly interested in marine top predator foraging ecology, behaviour and social organization.
Please e-mail me if you require a copy of my curriculum vitae.
PHOTOGRAPHY
I have been taking photographs since my boyhood in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park. Despite studying zoology, I have continued to explore my environment through photography. I have been a finalist in both the Natural History Museum's Young Wildife Photographer of the Year and Wildlife Photographer of the Year competitions. My images have appeared in Africa Geographic, Getaway, De Kat, the Sunday Times, the Cape Times, Pix, SA Camera and various other media. Most recently I was one of the principal photographers for the coffee table book "Marion and Prince Edward: Africa's Southern Islands" published by African Sun Media.
